So we'd like to tell you about a little something that's happening in Durban next week: Umhlanga's first NIGHT MARKET. Us Ruby girls love shopping, who doesn't right? And this little night market is even closer to our hearts because it was born right within the Ruby team.
While I (Kim) was overseas travelling at the beginning of the year, my thoughts revolved a lot around starting a new market project in Umhlanga. I didn't want this to be just any market though. The idea was to hold it at night within an urban landscape, much like the markets in Cape Town and Jozi, creating a truly festive and arty atmosphere. On my travels, I realised how normal this thing called "night shopping" is, and markets are open every night with so much to buy along with lots of delicious food. It's incredible, and it was honestly one of my favourite things about travelling! On arrival in South Africa, I put together a few awesome and resourceful people and we formed The Market Co., and began on our project which was soon to be named, Market at the Square.
This night market will be held at Granada Square centre in Umhlanga, with our first event being held next Friday, the 27th September. Located within the blend of retail, residential and restaurant space, it is a little something different. Market-goers will be able to meander through this festive space that will be transformed into a vibrant night-time experience, and we want it to be a place where all types of people can come and spend their Friday evenings once a month.
Think open-air urban landscape, festival lights, artisan wares, delicious specialty foods, live entertainment and Craft beer. Awesome, right? So we'd like to call upon all of Durban: creatives, crafters, artisans, collectors, foodies, connoisseurs, and everyone in between to join us at Umhlanga’s trendiest new gathering! Come and meander through the market, and discover some treasures along the way. We hope to see you there!
